AEHMS

The society was established in 1989 to promote holistic, ecosystemic, and integrated initiatives for the conservation and management of global aquatic resources.

Our Mission:

  • To promote and develop the concept of ecosystem health for the protection, conservation, and sustainable management of global aquatic resources
  • To encourage international, interdisciplinary, and crosssectoral communication and collaboration among scientists, universities, governments, industry, and public sectors for the development of practices and measures for aquatic ecosystem health
  • To utilize ecosystem health concepts and practices in relation to remediation and restoration of stressed aquatic ecosystems
  • To coalesce and disseminate information and provide training on the concept of aquatic ecosystem health

Our Objectives:

  • To promote an understanding of the natural functioning of aquatic ecosystems; the nature of ecosystem health; the requirements for the sustainablity of aquatic resources; and the remediation, healing, recovery, and restoration of stressed environments
  • To encourage ecosystemic, integrated, multitrophic, multidisciplinary, approaches to understanding and managing aquatic ecosystems
  • To advocate the development of new approaches, methods, and technologies for the practice of aquatic ecosystem health and restoration
  • To promote international cooperation and communication on aquatic ecosystem health through the establishment of international chapters in various countries
  • To disseminate information on ecosystem health through publications, newsletters, conferences, symposia, ecoforums, workshops, etc.

Synopsis:

  • To focus on aquatic ecosystem health (marine, freshwater, estuarine):

Ecosystem health assessment at structural, ultrastructural, functional and molecular levels Integrated, multitrophic and multidisciplinary approaches including physical, chemical, biological, and statistical evaluations Trophic interactions, food web dynamics/alterations, and carbon fixation pathways.

  • To promote an understanding of the functioning of stressed ecosystems, the remediation and restoration:

Ecosystem management and rest oration of stressed ecosystems Impact of contaminants, nutrients, exotic biota, habitat change, and other stresses Development of suitable programs for the healing, remediation, and recovery of ecosystems Promotion of appropriate remedial action plans for the healing, remediation, and recovery of ecosystems.

  • To encourage international, interdisciplinary, and crosssectorial). communication on ecosystem health and recovery:

Exchange of scientific information and integration of multidisciplinary expertise among government, academia, business and public sectors. International scientific cooperation and networking on global project technology transfer/exchange, and application of environmental law International workshops, symposia and conferences. International scientific journal on aquatic ecosystem health and management, and special publications, as needed.

Conferences\Symposia:

Since its inception, the Society has organized biennial conferences in various parts of the world, such as Canada, Germany, U.S.A, Portugal, and Mexico.

AEHMS has also organized symposia devoted to specific topic such as "Lake Huron ecology and fisheries", "Sediment Quality Assessment", " Ecosystem Modeling", and "Great Lakes of the World", that were held in Canada, Sweden, Italy, and Zimbabwe.

Working Groups:

The Society has initiated working groups to advance integrated and holistic approaches and special interest topic on a global basis. So far, they include:

    • Sediment Quality Assessment
    • Great Lakes of the World (GLOW)
    • Ecosystem Health of Harbours
    • Ecotechnology bioassays, remediation and restoration
    • AEHMS PUBLICATIONS

AEHMS has expanded its mission to emphasize remediation and restoration. It will continue to publish an official journal (entitled Aquatic Ecosystem Health & Management) reflecting the mission and objectives of the Society.

AEHMS also endorses various environmental publications that focus on the ecosystemic and integrated management of global ecosystems.

Conferences\Symposia:

AEHMS is establishing chapters in various parts of the world to promote the practices of ecosystem health, restoration, and conservation.
To express interest in initiating a chapter, or for information on the nearest chapter please contact the Society now, or write to the mailing address below.

AEHMS Membership:

The Society welcomes individuals for membership from a variety disciplines. They should be interested in or pursuing activities related aquatic ecosystem health, integrity, ecology, remediation, and restoration protection, conservation, management of aquatic ecosystems; sustainability and sustainable use of aquatic resources, or related fields. Please contact the Society now, fill out a membership application, or write to the mailing address given below for further membership information.
