WELCOME
On behalf of the Steering and Scientific Committees we welcome
you to an exciting experience in Arusha, Tanzania. Almost five years
ago a working group called "Great Lakes of the World"
was established by Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society
(AEHMS) to promote better communications, exchange of ideas and
technology between Great Lakes scientists. The GLOW working group
was also charged with a mandate to organize and facilitate integrated
and in-depth publications on the Great Lakes of the world. This
is the third in a series of symposia organized by the AEHMS following
those held in Zimbabwe (GLOW I) and Ireland (GLOW II).
The previous GLOW meetings were highly successful and productive
attended by active researchers. The success of previous GLOW meetings
is apparent from the resulting publications. For example GLOW I
generated a special issue of Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management
(Munawar, 2000) as well as a peer reviewed book (Munawar and Hecky,
2001) published under the Ecovision World Monograph Series. A special
issue of our journal is now in press which originated from GLOW
II. The GLOW III being held in Arusha is justifiably and naturally
overwhelmed by the research, issues and problems of the African
Great Lakes particularly Lake Victoria. In fact GLOW III is a timely
and useful gathering since several projects are in the final stages
of completion providing new insights. This hopefully will generate
highly needed world attention for the problems and sound management
of African Great Lakes through various presentations and expected
publications from this gathering of expertise.
A large number of presentations (76) are included in the attached
program including African, North American, Asian and other lakes
of Africa. The program presents an interesting integration of relevant
topics and also appear to succeed in providing a state-of-the lake
picture for some of the lakes.
The Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society (AEHMS), Lake
Victoria Fisheries Research Project (LVFRP) and other co-sponsors
extend a warm welcome to all of you in the beautiful surroundings
of Arusha, Tanzania. We wish you a challenging, enjoyable and productive
meeting.
