GLOW III is part of a continuing
series of international symposia being organized by AEHMS to promote
interaction and communication between Great Lakes scientists and
communities across the world. The first two conferences were successfully
organized in Zimbabwe and Ireland. At GLOW III one may expect to
interact with a wide range of scientists and other interested persons,
working on the Great Lakes, including the African Great Lakes -
Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria. This is an opportune time to meet
in Africa since various international projects on the African Great
Lakes are winding up and therefore new interesting results and emerging
management issues may be presented.
The third GLOW Conference will
be a unique one as it is organized at the foot of Africa's highest
mountain, the Kilimanjaro. February is renowned for its cloudless
skies and then the sight of this peak is breathtaking. Arusha is
strategically located in order to pay visits to the Serengeti and
Ngorongoro National Parks. Also smaller parks and game reserves
can be visited, each one of them with different astonishing landscapes.
Looking at the map you will find three of the African Great Lakes
belonging to the host country!
Arusha is the seat of the UN War
Crime Tribunal and as such blessed with numerous restaurants, with
a wide variety of African and European dishes. Medical services
are good and connections by air are formidable. Accommodation will
be arranged in the Impala Hotel, however, upon request hotels of
plus or minus one star can be arranged also. Arusha was selected
to allow conference participants to bring their families to enjoy
an incredible and unforgettable experience in Africa.
The proposed tentative themes for GLOW III are given below:
Impact of climate change on the
Great Lakes
Biodiversity: Legacy and loss in the Great Lakes
Structure, functions and performance of the Great Lakes Food webs
Exotic Invasion of the Great Lakes
Is Eutrophication a priority for Great Lakes Management?
Contamination of the Great Lakes and its impact on fisheries
Conservation and rehabilitation of the Great Lakes
Integrated management of the Great Lakes: Options for the future
Emerging technology for the Great lakes: Monitoring and research
