On behalf of the SQA6 Organising committee, the Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society (AEHMS) and the Ecosystem Management Research Group, we are pleased to welcome you in Antwerp, the city of diamonds, located on the borders of the Scheldt estuary. This is the 6th biennial international symposium on Sediment Quality Assessment following those held in Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and the USA. The symposium brings together international experts on sediment issues to share best-in-class practices in the fields of sediment quality assessment and management from source to sink. The importance of the meeting results from growing awareness of the role of sediment quality and quantity within the aquatic ecosystem. Sediments are an essential part of ecosystem and therefore good sediment management practices are an essential part of the integrated water management. New insights and approaches concerning this will be presented and discussed by both scientists and sediment quality managers.
The theme of the symposium focuses on watersheds, sediment management from source to sink. This theme will be the read line throughout the symposium presented by the keynote speakers. These presentations will focus on sediment management within the different regions of the world. Beside this various themes were selected and the presentations were assembled in a coherent and interesting fashion. The program consists of 54 platform and 24 poster presentations. The scientific programme has been intermingled with a boat trip on the river Scheldt with a visit to the polder of Kruibeke-Basel-Rupelmonde which will become controlled inundation area.
Traditionally AEHMS emphasizes publications of papers originating from activities it convenes. The publication committee plans to publish peer-reviewed papers in a book the Ecovision World Monograph Series and/or in a special issue of Aquatic Ecosystem Health & Management, depending on the nature and type of papers submitted. The promptness of publication is totally dependent upon the timely submission of manuscripts and its peer review process. Therefore, we urge you to confirm your publication plans with the Society before the end of the conference to facilitate timely publication of presented material.
As the co-chair of this conference, we are honoured and delighted to extent a warm welcome to all of you in the beautiful and historical surroundings of Antwerp.
