On behalf of the SQA4 Organizing Committee, the Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society (AEHMS), and the Lake Biwa Research Institute (LBRI), we are pleased to welcome you to the International Symposium on Sediment Quality Assessment. This symposium is the fourth in a series of symposia being organized by AEHMS every two years. Previously such symposia were conducted in Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands. These symposia are designed to attract professional experts that are actively involved in the field of sediment quality assessment, remediation and management. Our enthusiastic Japanese host has adopted an extremely important and interesting theme: Approaches, Insights and Technology for the 21s` Century focusing on the management of contaminated sediments, remediation, restoration and rehabilitation. Hopefully the results should facilitate the input of the best available scientific knowledge and sediment quality management into different decision making frameworks.
As you may notice, an integrated strategy has been adopted for developing the programme. Various themes have been systematically selected which will be led by the keynote speakers to provide a topdown overview of the topic. The programme consists of invited lectures, special sessions, keynote speeches, platform presentations and posters. The scientific programme has been intermingled with a field trip to a beautiful island in Lake Biwa, as well as a visit to Lake Biwa Museum, so that the participants will be able to enjoy an informal atmosphere.
The Organizing Committee has been working hard to make SQA4 as interesting and productive as possible. As per the tradition of AEHMS, we hope that the manuscripts submitted will all result in peer reviewed publication in a special issue of our journal - Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management (AEHM) - and/or under the Ecovision World Monograph Series. We urge all participants to submit their papers by the deadline so that we can expedite the publication process.
As the co-chairs of SQA4, we are honored and delighted to extend a warm welcome to all the participants in the beautiful and scenic surroundings of Otsu. Japan.
