  Ecosummit-2000 Conference

  Scope of the Summit
The aim of this second EcoSummit is to encourage integration of both the natural and social sciences with the policy and decision-making community, for the purpose of developing a deeper understanding of complex problems. This understanding will provide the basis for sustainable solutions to environmental problems. The structure of this EcoSummit is unique in the sense that it is a Summit rather than a workshop or conference. All delegates will be able to participate actively during the EcoSummit through the Working Groups, in addition to the contributed poster sessions.
This EcoSummit is centred around the following six Themes:
  • Integrated modelling and assessment
  • Complex, adaptive, hierarchical systems
  • Ecosystem services
  • Science and decision-making
  • Ecosystem health and human health
  • Quality of life and the distribution of wealth and resources
The organising committee have identified these Themes as necessary in reaching the goal of understanding and solving environmental problems in the 21st century. Each Theme agenda will be developed in advance of the summit, and a Working Group on each of the six Themes will be held during the course of the summit. The six Theme Working Groups will be run concurrently on Tuesday, 20 June and Wednesday, 21 June and all delegates are invited to actively participate in one or more of these Working Groups. Each Chair has produced a list of key questions for their Theme, which will form the agenda for each Theme.
The Working Groups will be preceded by a Plenary session on Monday, 19 June, where each Theme chair will present a state-of-the-art Plenary talk and pose the key questions which form the basis of the Working Group agendas. On the final day there will be another Plenary session, at which the Rapporteurs will summarise their Theme Working Group outcomes.
